Tears of Hope

I came across this on vimeo and was really sobered and encouraged by it. What a beautiful picture of the hope that we have in Christ. "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him, in the midst of loss, not prosperity." John Piper

I was laughing so hard at the boys going around on this little airplane. Ben didn't crack a smile the entire ride but insisted on doing it again and again.

Fish

photo Fish photo Sheet Metal Fish

I got inspired a few weeks ago when we went out to dinner. I must have ordered the wrong thing because my meal was terrible but the metal fish hanging above our table were amazing. I went to Lowes that evening, bought 9 bucks worth of sheet metal and made some for the boys room.

Tim Keller

True and Better from Peter Artemenko on Vimeo.

Watch on Redeemer.com

I heard this talk by Tim Keller at the first Gospel Coalition Conference back in 2007 and it has always stuck with me.  He has the unique ability to distill complex biblical truths into a very palatable form.

"Jesus is the true and better Adam who passed the test in the garden and whose obedience is imputed to us.
Jesus is the true and better Abel who, though innocently slain, has blood now that cries out, not for our condemnation, but for acquittal.
Jesus is the true and better Abraham who answered the call of God to leave all the comfortable and familiar and go out into the void not knowing wither he went to create a new people of God.
Jesus is the true and better Isaac who was not just offered up by his father on the mount but was truly sacrificed for us. And when God said to Abraham, “Now I know you love me because you did not withhold your son, your only son whom you love from me,” now we can look at God taking his son up the mountain and sacrificing him and say, “Now we know that you love us because you did not withhold your son, your only son, whom you love from us.”
Jesus is the true and better Jacob who wrestled and took the blow of justice we deserved, so we, like Jacob, only receive the wounds of grace to wake us up and discipline us.
Jesus is the true and better Joseph who, at the right hand of the king, forgives those who betrayed and sold him and uses his new power to save them.
Jesus is the true and better Moses who stands in the gap between the people and the Lord and who mediates a new covenant.
Jesus is the true and better Rock of Moses who, struck with the rod of God’s justice, now gives us water in the desert.
Jesus is the true and better Job, the truly innocent sufferer, who then intercedes for and saves his stupid friends.
Jesus is the true and better David whose victory becomes his people’s victory, though they never lifted a stone to accomplish it themselves.
Jesus is the true and better Esther who didn’t just risk leaving an earthly palace but lost the ultimate and heavenly one, who didn’t just risk his life, but gave his life to save his people.
Jesus is the true and better Jonah who was cast out into the storm so that we could be brought in.
Jesus is the real Rock of Moses, the real Passover Lamb, innocent, perfect, helpless, slain so the angel of death will pass over us. He’s the true temple, the true prophet, the true priest, the true king, the true sacrifice, the true lamb, the true light, the true bread.
The Bible’s really not about you—it’s about him."

Sam

Sam gets the easiest baby award today. Before this little guy, I hated feeding the kids. Will would always spit out the baby food and Ben would find a way to turn his head at the last second. It was torture. Sam just smiles and opens wide.

Get Close!

Photo Tip - Get Close! Especially if your taking pictures kids. Get up in there face and make them smile. Zoom lenses work great, but you will get a different look if your are physically closer to your subject. If you want to isolate your subject even more by blurring the background (out of focus elements in a picture are called bokeh), get yourself a nice prime lens.  The Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 is a good place to start and the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 even better. If you have a Canon - get one of these Canon 50mm f/1.8.

Reading to the kids

1D3_0983

We just ordered some new (to us) Adam Racoon books on Amazon. They aren't printing them anymore which is a bummer so you have to buy them used. Here are some of our favorites books right now:

1. The Jesus Storybook Bible - Every Story whisters his name, by Sally Lloyd-Jones - Don't be fooled into thinking this is kids bible.
2. Paul Bunyan - Written and illustrated by steven kellog - Watch out for the colossal flapjacks!
3. The garden of Abdul Gasazzi - Great illustraitons and cool twist at the end.
4. Adam Racoon and Forever Falls - also check out Lost Woods and The Flying machine - great books
5. Polkabats and Octopus Slacks by Calef Brown - Sometimes i rap this to the kids.

These are what I usually reach for when were putting the boys to bed.
